Family Fun Day

The postponed Family Day has been rescheduled for this Sunday! Please let me know if you plan to attend so I can keep a look out for you on the day or let you know if I come up with a plan B if the weather is not picnic friendly. The forecast shows rain leading up to Sunday but looks fairly rain free on Sunday. See below for the details,

CHEC Event – Nature Group Bushwalk (Square Rock Trail, Namadgi National Park)

Dear CHEC Families,

Sending through an updated invite for this bushwalk as the March walk is cancelled due to illness among participating families.

Please join us for a 9.44km return hike to Square Rock within Namadgi National Park in April.

Date: Friday 29 April 2022

Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm (please arrive no later than 10.00am for a prompt departure, depending on where you live you will need to allow for sufficient travel time to make it to Namadgi by 10am)

Meeting place: Square Rock (‘Smokers Gap’) car park on Corin Road (the trail begins near the Smokers Gap entrance to Namadgi National Park)

To bring: Please ensure everyone is wearing appropriate hiking footwear, sun/weather protective clothing and has an adequate water supply. Bring your own picnic lunch to enjoy from Square Rock. Given the nature of this hike I recommend walking with a backpack only (rather than shoulder/nappy bag or basket). Snakes are active and territorial in this area even in Autumn, so long trousers and closed footwear are recommended.

Other considerations: This is a longer walk (9.44km) and is not suitable for prams due to the uneven trail, stairs, ladder and cliff edges. Baby-wearing is absolutely manageable on this trail depending on your comfort level. Given the sheer cliff edges from Square Rock, I will absolutely insist upon a seated lunch / no children to play on the rock and adult supervision at all times. This walk is suitable for children ages 7+ who can walk independently for 4-5 hours (younger children are of course welcome, particularly if they have bush walking experience – you know your children best).

Here is a summary of the trail for your information: https://australianhiker.com.au/trails/square-rock/

RSVP: Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to come along (so that we can be sure to depart together as a group).

Warmly,

Ebony (0412 682 580)

Messiah in the Passover Banquet

Celebrate Messiah Australia and Hineh Yeshua Congregation invite you to celebrate Passover with us. The Passover Banquet will be held at

Vision Church’s building, 1 Lithgow St, Fyshwick ACT.

Come join us for a wonderful night as we celebrate Yeshua the Messiah in a Messianic Jewish Passover Seder.

Our annual Passover dinner brings together Jewish people and non-Jewish people from the surrounding area to celebrate this ancient cultural and religious festival, which commemorates the Jewish people’s freedom from slavery in ancient Egypt, and our ultimate redemption through Messiah Yeshua.

There will be a professionally catered three course meal accompanied by music and dancing as we retell the story of Passover. Hosted by Ps. Robert Miles of Hineh Yeshua Congregation with Celebrate Messiah Australia – a ministry dedicated to sharing the good news of Israel’s Messiah with the Jewish people. Come and see why this night is different from all other nights of the year!

NPG: Shakespeare to Winehouse – Icons from the National Portrait Gallery London

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the guided session, but for those who are interested I (Alice, with Elizabeth, 6, Alexander, 4, and Theodore, 1.5) will be booking to attend the exhibition independently from 10am. Thinking if the weather is good we might have a picnic afterwards!

A “family guide” booklet is available to anyone on request at the front desk any time.

You can book tickets here

Prices (copied from NPG website):
$25 Adult / $22 Concession / $20 Members / $10 Youth (16–26) / $5 Child (15-3) / Children 2 and under free / $58 Family (2 adults + 3 children)
Tickets will be refunded in full for any COVID lockdown shenanigans.
Please note we cannot accept cash payments at the Gallery.

From Shakespeare to Winehouse, Darwin to Dickens, the Beatles, Brontë sisters and Beckham, the National Portrait Gallery London holds the world’s most extensive collection of portraits. While they undergo the largest renovation of their building in 125 years, we’re thrilled to say that over 80 treasures from their collection are travelling to Australia for an exclusive exhibition with us in 2022!

Start planning now to visit famous faces from the sixteenth century to today. Think Mandela, Malala, Churchill, Diana, Bowie, Sheeran, Westwood and more! And iconic artists like Warhol, Hockney, Emin, van Dyck, Rubens and Freud. There’ll be fame, power, love, loss, innovation and the downright inspirational – it’s going to be incredible.

This really is a rare, once-in-a-generation opportunity – showing exclusively at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra – so keep calm and grab your ticket!

CHEC Event – Day trip to Jamberoo Action Park

Dear CHEC Families,

I will be taking my children Edward (8) and Ottoline (4) to spend the day at Jamberoo Action Park on Friday 4th March 2022 and wanted to see if anyone else in the CHEC community would be interested in coming along and making a day of it as we enjoy the last vestiges of Summer?

Date: Friday 4 March 2022

Time: Departing Canberra by 7.30am to allow arrival at Jamberoo Action Park by opening at 10.00am, with return travel from approximately 4.00pm (arrival in Canberra around 6.30pm)

Transport: Private vehicles (we would meet at Jamberoo shortly before opening at 9.45am)

Location: Jamberoo Action Park is located at 1215 Jamberoo Road, Jamberoo NSW. Depending on your starting point, it’s approximately 2.5 hours drive from Canberra.

Cost: I have made preliminary enquiries with Jamberoo and we can register as a school group visit for $37 per person, as long as we have a minimum of 15 participants. The normal entry fee is $50 per child and $60 per adult (e-tickets booked in advance) or $60 per child and $70 per adult if tickets purchased upon arrival at the gate.

Other inclusions: The school group discount also gives us access to a dedicated shelter for the day so anyone not swimming (or taking a break!) can relax there and it would be our “home base” for lunch and storing our belongings etc. Food and beverages are available for purchase at Jamberoo or you can pack a picnic and bring your own.

RSVP: If you are interested in coming along, please let me know so I can facilitate a group booking no later than next Friday 18th February 2022. This is of course conditional upon numbers, though I will be going along with Edward and Ottie either way. We would only cancel in the event of inclement weather.

Contact: Ebony | 0412 682 580 | ebony.maria@icloud.com

Other considerations: Please visit the Jamberoo website at www.jamberoo.net and consider whether the attractions are suitable for the children in your family, taking into account their individual swimming abilities. It does look like there are great options for younger children by way of shallow splash play environments etc. (e.g. “Banjo’s Billabong”, minimum height 100cm) so I think it could be a great fit across age groups, however you will need to consider supervision requirements and your level of comfort allowing older children to ride larger slides etc. independently if you are in a situation where you will need to most immediately supervise younger children. Please also check the height and weight restrictions applicable for each attraction to avoid any disappointment on the day.

If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading through this missive and we hope you’ll consider joining us for a fun day in the sun!

CHEC Event – Nature Group Bushwalk (Mount Majura Saddle Circuit)

Dear CHEC Families,

Please join us for our second Nature Group event this term: a walk up Mount Majura within the Canberra Nature Park.

Mount Majura has an elevation of 888m (just beating Mount Ainslie!) and great views of the Majura Valley and airport from the saddle.

Date: Friday 25 February 2022

Time: Departing 11.00am sharp, with an estimated return of approximately 2.00pm (depending on duration of our lunch break).

Meeting place: Please meet us no later than 11.00am (for a prompt departure) at the gravel car park at the base of Mt. Majura which is located at the far end of Antill Street, Hackett (you can’t miss it, there is a bus shelter and the size of the car park is considerable).

To bring: Please ensure everyone is wearing appropriate footwear, sunhats and has an adequate water supply. Bring your own picnic lunch to enjoy from the saddle summit. Given the nature of the hike I recommend bringing everything in a backpack rather than shoulder/nappy bags/baskets.

Other considerations: This walk is not suitable for prams due to the presence of stiles, stairs and some sections of gravel track. It’s a great walk to take a baby or toddler on if you will be comfortable wearing a baby carrier or hiking pack for the duration. Otherwise I would suggest it is limited to children aged 5+ who are able to walk independently for up to three hours (you know your children best).

There will be plenty of opportunities to catch our breath along the way while waiting for the children to explore the many ponds, climbing trees and interesting natural features we will see.

We will be going ahead in all but the most severe weather conditions – it’s an especially magical walk in the rain!

RSVP: Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to come along (so that we can be sure to wait for you before we depart).

Warmly,

Ebony (0412 682 580)
